From my understanding, a person restricts food or keeps their weight at a low level because this helps them to feel that they can control one thing in their lives. So when the weight starts to go up to a healthy weight this puts the control out of balance so you are left in the middle trying to choose. I think that working on gaining a feeling of control over the rest of your life is how you learn to stop needing the control from an eating disorder. The things that feel out of control are the feelings that have been repressed and that need to come out in therapy. While growing up things felt out of control so learning today to focus on what helps your life to feel stable is important for feeling that things are under control. Plus talking in therapy about how things have felt so out of control so that you can release these feelings and put your past into perspective and work through it.
