That is a wonderful realization. I use to ask myself, when I was sad or unhappy; "how should you feel in these circumstances" (and then I'd picture myself laughing at a funeral and shudder at the inappropriateness of that :-) I'd realize that our feelings are just what they are, just give us information on how we're dealing with what's happening inside/outside us and are not the culprit, don't need replacing or fixing (and they'll change on their own anyway since new things are always happening inside/out).
