It's like any other behavior, you have to learn to do it. That means you have to get experience, do it, before you can get good at it. Sorry you had the two bad experiences, I wouldn't worry about your girlfriend and her criticisms, just be glad you aren't going to be kissing her with her negative/teacher attitude! :-)
