I agree, too--as a former college professor. It won't hurt to ask, if you do it politely. Maybe something like, "I really am enjoying the class and the readings, but I really need some extra time to get the readings done......" (Well, don't lie--ha--but we're human, so if you feel comfortable with it, some buttering up doesn't hurt!)
