This is just my opinion Laura, but he sounds a little bit desperate. Prehaps things have taken a bit of a downward turn in his life, and hes thinking about what hes lost. I personally, have had thoughts about ladies I used to go out with and wishing it was still going on. Just a speculative thought.

Although I'm male, I think before sexes can be weird sometimes. At least from what I can tell, lol. Try not to give up hope, you may yet find someone who suits you. They might even come along when your not expecting it. Or so I've been told.
