Well hello and welcome to PC. Actually, the chat room has been updated several times in the last few years.  Though I like the one over at neurotalk better, this one is good for us here, imo.
I'm not a mod or nothing, so don't worry about my opinion. 
There are 16 colors, and yes, one is a burgandy red. I do have a problem with red font, especially when it scrolls with blue (which many use here.) Red font causes migraines and can also cause seizures in susceptible people (of which we do have a few here.) When it scrolls like in a fast chat, it's mind boggling for me.
We used to have other smileys, some which were really bad like poop and a handgun, so the ones we have are pretty good considering. 
Give it a chance to grow on you?
The room names are basics. But you can make your own chat room and call it what you think is more exciting I guess. You can even make it a private chat room that is passworded. The auditorium is left pretty much for hosted chats, like DocJohn's twice a week.
