Lamictal is a mood stabilizer often prescribed for BP. It's not so much "super intense", but it has side effects that you have to be aware of. You have to start the dosage very low (I was started at 12.5 mg a day, increase by 12.5 mg every week until I reached full dose). Increasing too rapidly can put you at risk for Stevens-Johnson syndrome which is a rash that can be deadly. That being said, a lot of people have had good luck with Lamictal.
If you're not sure about your diagnosis or don't fully understand your medications, you should have your doctor explain it thoroughly.
