When they ask about suicidal thoughts, cutting, etc., they just want to make certain that you are not in immediate danger and need to seek immediate treatment in the ER to prevent you from inflicting self-harm. darkmood's suggestion about writing some things down ahead of your appointment is excellent and will help you communicate your feelings more clearly during your assessment since the process can feel a bit daunting and overwhelming when you are first seeking help.
