I own many rental units and my partners are lawyers and I could have a legal opinion sent to you from them regarding your situation with the deposit. When I ask them to do these type of opinions, there is no charge to you ,for anyone on a mental-health forum is a friend of mine.This depends on the state that you are renting in and some other factors. I have a broad-based knowlege of security deposits for I have to follow the laws concerning that. They can be tricky.
