My service dog isn't for my panic disorder (PTSD) but he sure helps! He self taught himself to "climb" up onto my lap (his front paws and head as he stands on his hind legs) whenever I've become upset or anxious. He won't leave until I do calm...even though I can forget what he's doing and try to push him off or order him off. He stays right there until I can calmly assure him I'm okay (again.)
So much of what you are trying to do without the dog is part of what the dog will help you do with him.
