MonWing, you somewhat answered your own concern/question. the ppl you worry about you have no control over what happens in their lives. if you put the focus on you, you can become the person YOU want to be/become. that way you can influence ppl by your conduct. it's like living by example.
and whayt JD said, you can channel your future to help those less fortunate.
