Welcome! Glad you are here.

I know that, for many people, anxiety increases a LOT when they are out of work. You are not alone. It sounds like you've been through some big changes in the last few years. It's great that you're able to recognize the anxiety and look for help.

My anxiety comes partly from having to be perfect to other people. So if I want to do something like take a class, I get overwhelmed trying to get ALL the information or pick the BEST program. Is it the process you are having trouble with? If so, can a family member help you register, or can you speak to someone at the school who gets paid to walk you through the process?

Maybe breaking things into tiny steps so you can see all the little decisions on paper would help you when you have that "head spinning" feeling (I've been there!).

Or do you have trouble reaching out to people? Sometimes when my social anxiety is bad I will have a family member sit by me while I make a call or fill out paperwork--it eases the stress because I feel safe.

Would you be willing to take a part time job, volunteer, or do an "easy" full-time job temporarily for the structure? Can you take something that isn't perfect now, as a way for you to learn about yourself?

I know any advice is easier said than done. I'm sorry it's so rough right now and I hope you find some helpful information.

For me, just a few sessions of therapy helped my anxiety enormously and I really benefit from workbooks about anxiety. If you feel really stuck, you might benefit from talking it out with someone (and PC can help if that process is overwhelming!).

Take care of you. Congratulations on your retirement! Hope your anxiety is better today.
