Dr Clay's book ..in chapter 14 discusses these two concepts at length. http://www.psychologicalselfhelp.org/Chapter14/chap14_1.html

I prefer to sum the 2 concepts up into one. Self esteem is not something to be worked on and developed, fed and nurtured in and of itself, in my opinion. But self esteem is the outcome of action specifically done to benefit others. The self worth materializes via activity demonstrating purpose in life. Harnessing that power within us--to do good-- is self efficacy.

To be quite succinct, it might do one better to quit worrying over how badly she feels about herself, and take that energy and do things for others. The reward of that action, of volunteering for the benefit of others, creates the better feeling within her and her self esteem rises.

If we stop focussing upon ourselves and turn our focus to doing a good act for another, the act lights a fire within that warms the satisfaction palette. We realize we can have a purpose bigger than ourselves and it feels good inside too!
