I wouldn't worry so much hon, he obviously feels safe with you and feels that you are not going to stalk him, so he is comfortable with your friendship.

Be light happy and cool and email him saying how good it is to be in contact again and that you hope he is really well. IT doesn't matter if you are not wealthy, and if something like that is important to him (which it obviously is not), he isn't a friend.

Sounds to me that you have a great friendship with someone really nice, so go up to him at venues and say hi if you're both there,
