You had some breathing difficulties in the sleep. Your dream indicates that you were sleeping on your belly and needed to move your arms. That is why the dream made you swim for your life!
In sleep we make or simulate the movements the dream suggests. The dream also often describe the sleeping position. So you were thrashing about in your bed like you were doing the dog paddle in water.
Another point to note; the movements in sleep relate to the level of consciousness. Generally in the lower levels (deeper sleep) the movements are small like twitching muscles, nearer to the waking level the movements are more pronounced.
