Oh my. That "green gunk" you all are referring to is called "Heavenly Hash." It can also be pink, depending upon the jello, or cherries. I've heard it called Hawaiian Fruit Salad, but not sure it came from there. I think Jello created it in the 70s.
It's a great little dessert salad, esp. for holidays or summer heat.

Ingredients:

Serves: 8, Yield: 4 cups *

* 4 ounces gelatin, any flavor
* 3/4 cup boiling water
* 1/2 cup cold water
* ice cube
* 1 cup non-dairy whipped topping or 1 cup sour cream
* 20 ounces crushed pineapple, drained
* 11 ounces mandarin orange sections, drained
* 1 cup miniature marshmallow
* 1/4 cup walnuts or 1/4 cup pecans, chopped

Directions:

Prep Time: 15 mins Total Time: 15 mins

1. Complete dissolve gelatin in boiling water.
2. Combine cold water and ice cubes to make 1 1/4 cups.
3. Add to gelatin, stirring until slightly thickened.
4. Remove any unmelted ice.
5. Add whipped topping, blending until smooth.
6. Stir in pineapple, mandarin oranges, marshmallows, and nuts.
7. Pour into serving bowl or individual dessert dishes.
8. Chill until set, about 2 hours.
