When you have plans you put more pressure on yourself to get sleep. "I need sleep because I am going to do all this" Instead of "I have nothing to do, so its okay if I don't." You don't worry about it as much.
I read somewhere that people who are exhausted can have real trouble to sleep because they get so tense. Doing deep breathing and tensing all for muscles and releasing helps to relieve tension.
