I can understand this concern. However, everyone's chemistry is different and how they react to meds. Wellbutrin and Wellbutrin XL are prescribed for depression. As for being prescribed for anxiety, it is not specifically prescribed for this and can exacerbate it or not, depends on the person and varies. This can also be said for many other anti-depressants in some other classes as well.

For me, after trying literally every antidepressant available over the years, Wellbutrin and then switched to Wellbutrin XL, were the only ones that did NOT raise my anxiety level. Kept trying others in case something might work better but would return to them. I appreciate this medication more than I can say just for this reason, besides, for me it lifted the depression and had the fewest side-effects.

There is another component to anxiety though that is not just chemical, that needs to be treated with therapy. Chemicals can exacerbate it, true, but at times can have the opposite effect such as in my case. One has to watch for your own personal reaction to a med and go from there.
