I don't think dreams should ever be seen as silly or irrelevant. I find it interesting and at the very least entertaining to delve into the world of dream interpretation. Sometimes the subconscious could just be spilling out a huge amount of arbitrary signs and symbols but it doesn't hurt to investigate them to see if there might be any relevance to their meanings.

Water usually symbolises the feminine and emotional in a dream, as well as your potential to change things in your life. The obvious and very literal interpretation for the symbol of water in a dream is of course cleansing; getting rid of and 'washing away' the negative aspects of your life that you might be dealing with at the moment. Going into a pool of water usually points to a new beginning. If you are in shallow water in the dream it could mean that you have a lack of energy pertaining to a certain matter. So it could mean that you are at a point in your life that you are starting something new but you don't really have the energy for it, and it might have to do with something emotional rather than physical. If this is not the case it might be a precognitive dream, if you believe in stuff like that (personally I do). Swimming (as you mentioned racing after Vanessa Carlton) indicates that you have the ability to handle emotional situations well. This contrasts to what I've said but maybe it's just pointing to a character trait that you should use in the situation of lacking energy to deal with whatever you are starting.

To dream of a boy usually means that you have potential for growth or that there might be a new experience that you are dealing with in your life (yet again). To dream of a girl also signifies an attempt to come into contact with your more emotional side. When the girl is unknown, like in your situation, it could mean that a fresh approach to the new experience should be taken, which could help you in the matter of you lacking the energy to do so.

I'm not entirely sure of the Vanessa Carlton significance but I guess the most obvious would be that she represents someone that you idolise/think high of and it could be that you feel you go unnoticed in this person's presence, hence the anger. Anger in a dream signifies the desire to express your emotions properly, which you might not be doing in your waking life. The emotion felt in a dream is always something to take note of.

I'm not sure about the Rachel situation. When a friend appears in the dream it most likely denotes concern for that friend, or it could be an indication that you should adapt qualities that that friend has that you could use to your benefit, however, with Rachel being your ex-friend I'm not sure if this is right.

Hope my hippy psychobabble helped :-)
