SJW is part of a potential SSRI withdrawal treatment plan put forth by the learned Dr. Healy. So long as the total dose of the two antidepressants adds to one normal dose, you should be okay. For example, if you dropped to 2/3 of the Paxil dose, it's okay to take 1/3 of the SJW dose. And so on.

Don't go nuts on SJW until you know how your body works with it. Temporary side effects can include headache and stomach upset, but you can take Tylenol or Pepto-Bismol or whatever you would normally do to treat those symptoms. You can also increase the dose beyond the standard 900 mg/day, just as they increase with other antidepressants, if you get a weak response after 3 or 4 weeks. There are no toxic concerns, except increased sensitivity to sunlight. So, wear sunblock.

However, SJW interacts with the same meds that grapefruit do, but in the opposite direction. Rather than blocking enzyme 3A4, SJW induces it. Makes it work faster. That means that oral birth control (hormone) pills will be less effective, and you need back up to prevent pregnancy.

Good luck. I hope you feel better soon.
