Yes it works. But if you have doubts, it may not work as well...so be sure to learn how NOW before you really need it, and then you'll be ready.
I've used self hypnosis for over 30 years, often for pain. I refined my ability with a dentist who was uncomfortable working on me without nitrous oxide, which I could not use. (I was fine with him working on me without it--he wouldn't. lol) So he worked with me for hypnosis on a more professional level. We then went ahead with the dental work after about 3 weeks. (But remember, I had learned the basics and used them on my own.)
Please work with a professional expert in this (and not someone who calls herself/himself a "hypnotist" as they may not have the necessary skills for handling any MI disorder.) A hypnotherapist is the correct term, or another type of doctor/therapist who is certified in hypnotherapy. You'll be fine then.
It's a great tool! My first real work (before the dentist) was for a large splinter that had gone up under my thumbnail... I numbed it and felt NO pain...and did this while I was driving! (No deep trance required.)
Good wishes!
