I came off Zoloft for a bit and I had a very similar experience. I tapered down slowly and didn't have any problems. It wasn't until I had stopped taking it completely for about 2 weeks that things started to go downhill. The first thing to get screwed up was my sleep. I also became extremely irritable and I was snapping at everyone. It was hard to tell how much was due to lack of sleep and how much was due to "discontinuation syndrome". I also had those brain zap things.

I stayed off Zoloft for about 4 months in total and was med-free during that period. But as time went on I became much more anxious and much more depressed. I am now back on Zoloft again.

Definitely not saying that you will have to go back on it. Just wanted to share my personal experience. I quit because I didn't think Zoloft was working for me anymore. I don't have any bad side effects from it, I just thought it had "pooped out". But after being off it for a few months I realized that it was helping quite a bit. And that's why I'm back on it.

Are you taking any other meds? It's good you're in close contact with your doc. Wishing you all the best!
