I really don't see why people feel they need alcohol to enjoy a party/event/situation/etc. I mean, I get it when they're in so much pain, they just want to numb themselves, or get whatever effect they get from the alcohol, but it's just sad if a person feels they can't enjoy something in life without alcohol. I also understand if a person is addicted, but a lot of people feel alcohol is needed who aren't addicted.
I don't think alcohol is a bad thing--if you drink responsibly, there's no reason you shouldn't enjoy it now and then. I just don't get people, like a lot of college kids, who binge drink and think it's just a part of being young. Putting yourself in danger or endangering others is just stupid. I know not everyone who drinks, even heavily, binge drinks, but I'm just saying that practice is stupid.
And back to the meds...if you don't want to be on meds, that's fine. There's no reason a person shouldn't try living without them (I'm going to). But you don't go cold turkey when you've been on them. You have to reduce the dosage slowly, and wean yourself off that way.
