We wanted this to be a special Christmas. My youngest son will be leaving for the military this summer and who knows where he’ll be next year. My mother even decorated her house. This is something she hasn’t done since my father died several years ago.

The holiday season kicked off with a bang when my mother slipped coming down the stairs and broke her ankle on the 20th. This had the added misfortune of making me the holiday cook at her house. She has a brand new kitchen and spent a fortune on her counter tops and NOTHING touches them without a placemat, trivet, or wooden cutting board underneath it. Not even dishes. So needless to say I was not looking forward to cooking in this new beautiful kitchen that is mainly just for show.

Then I was scheduled to work on Friday the 24th. I NEVER work on Fridays, it never occurred to me to ask for it off since it is one of my regular days off. This postponed my trip by a day and a half. I ended up working late, my mother called several times to find out when I was leaving. My son was scheduled to work until 6, which is something that never happens either so my husband and twins had to leave 5 hours after the other kids and I.

My mom asked that I bring the puppy with so she could see her. I didn’t really want to because her dog is not pet friendly and it is a big hassle keeping the dogs separated. In the end I did agree to do this.

When we finally got to my mother’s house everything was going well… for about a half hour. Her dog ended up in her crate which was expected. The puppy wanted to go out so I opened the door. My mother’s male cat wanted in at the same time.

This cat is HUGE. People do not believe how big he is until they see him for themselves. I am 5’7”. When the cat stands next to me his tail easily meets my hips. At his last vet visit he was 32 lbs. He is not fat, a bit on the lean side if anything. He’s just a HUGE cat. A Maine Coon mix for those of you that are familiar with them. He also has “mits” so he has 8 claws on one paw and 10 on the other.

He has never had a problem with dogs before. He’s never shown any fear of anything. He had his own Rott for years. For some reason he took an instant disliking to my puppy. I decided to bring her out the back door instead to allow the cat to come in the front door. He refused to come in the house and instead decided to come around back to stalk the dog. The puppy was not used of the steps on the back porch so she was leery of walking down them. I took that opportunity to calm the cat down. I pet him and talked to him. He returned to his normal stance, his hair went down and he started purring. I decided to pick him up and put him in the side door so that there were no further issues.
At that precise moment the puppy decided she COULD go down the stairs. I had almost picked the cat up and he slashed me in the face and neck; barely missing my eye. I have a perfect paw print on the right side of my neck; the whole left side of my face is slashed; the right side of my nose; I had two black eyes, and although I have been assured my nose isn’t broken only badly bruised, it hurts like it’s broken. I went in the house to clean the wounds, freaking out everyone there. We have a family friend that is a doctor and she came to look. She informed me that at least two of the wounds would require stitches.

As the doctor finished her exam my daughter’s phone rang. It was her father and he was asking her when she last filled her wiper fluid. She said “dad I can’t talk now, the cat slashed mom in the face and Dr. K says she has to get stitches.” It turns out he was asking because he stopped to fill it on the way up and discovered a deceased cat on her engine block. There was a big storm the day she came home from college. In fact she had to park her car an hour away and have her dad come get her in the four wheel drive. At this point apparently the cat crawled up in the car to get warm and met his demise.

This all seems to be a lot. But other highlights of the weekend are: someone accidentally turned the stove off while turkey was roasting, delaying dinner by several hours. My daughter ended up with a concussion after hitting her head at the in-laws. My one year old car decided that this was the trip it was going to act up, nearly stranding us on the way home (which turned out to be water in the gas line).

Ho, ho, ho, how was your Christmas?
Wow all of that I would not even have energy how is your nose now?Big huggs I believe you about your cat we had a very big cat and she eats a lot she dont know when she is full.Do your cat eat a lot?
