Great thinking and figuring out what his statements to you meant about his current behavior, and I am so sorry you have to deal with this in your marriage.

Addicts do this. And they actually mean it but they are unable to stop. Since he thinks his behavior is none of you business, I'm guessing he isn't getting help for this.
