My last boss' name was Matt. He had anger issues. I left after he threw three metal rods at me, and I could tell he wasn't even mad at me, he was just angry. I think your ex-boyfriend was trying to make you feel jealous, threatened and ganged up on. Who knows if he even has a new girl friend. He definitely sounds like he has issues. Anyway, I think you can report the threat to the police. That way it is on record, in case the situation should escalate. It's possible he has done this to other people, and the police may have this on record.
