My experience of depression is different from yours -- mine's pretty much constant. However, I do not believe you are alone in your experience. What concerns me is your depressive episodes becoming more frequent and intense.
Earlier, you were considering going either to your GP or to the counselling services at uni, yes? If you decide to go to the counselling services to discuss these developments, The Byzantine's suggestion of bringing records or having records sent to them from your prior caretakers is an excellent one. If bureaucratic friction makes that too slow, consider composing a brief Treatment Summary of your own to present to whoever sees you.
