meditation is the recommended technique for learning to manage uncontrolled thoughts.
the beginners technique is to simply sit and focus on the breath, notice the air go in and out of the nose; feel the chest expand and contract; count on the out-breath: 1001, 1002, 1003,,,, until you lose track, and then start over...
continue to do this until you forget to notice what you are thinking... then do it some more, every day, as often as you can remember, especially when you are feeling tired, hungry, angry or lonely.
racing thoughts are often called the "monkey mind" because they flit around grabbing onto every little thing. learning to focus your thought where you intend to, is like exercising a muscle, you get better and better at it as time goes by.
