My grandson is almost 2. While not actively being trained, he has been "introduced" to the potty. Just being silly, and to amuse him, my daughter put a diaper on a teddy bear. A few minutes later, my grandson said, "Potty." Naturally my daughter assumed he was asking to use it, so she took him there. It turned out he wasn't asking for himself. He wanted to put the bear on the potty.
