Skeeter is an unkind nickname given to the Mosquito. Usually used in the southern United States (as far as I know).

There is a city outside of Dallas Texas called Mesquite. There high school at one point (*my father was a graduate) had the mascot as the 'Squite Skeeters... and yes it was a mosquito.
