Does unemployment only kick in if a person is let go from a position? Or can it also be used in the case like mine where I have been on a 3-months short term disablity leave from work but feel not a bit better regardless of all the meds I'm taking than I did at first. I can't even imagine returning to my former job (which acerbated my stress/anxiety big time).

I've never been in this situation before so I don't know when it is appropriate to use unemployment comp as compared to long term disablity and who makes those decisions.
