No way should you give up your best friend. This isn't YOUR problem -- it's your girlfriend's problem. If she is so unstable that she can't understand a friendship between a male and a female, then she'd better take a hike. She has NO RIGHT to make you choose between her and your friend. I'd get rid of her, and find a girl who will accept the fact that you have a female as a best friend. That may be hard to find, but I'm sure there's one out there.
