I agree with the starting point of being what you said in your post.
You have a right to emotionally understand the rules of this relationship.
All relationships (working and otherwise) have rules. When we don't understand the rules, we can feel hurt and invalidated.

Be honest. It will be hard, but you can do it. And it will pay off for you.
