I do think there has to be an element of shared spirituality for any relationship to deepen and continue, as each person deepens their faith and moves forward. It doesn't guarantee success, but without it, failure is close by.
Why not take turns visiting each other's places of worship while you finish school? Education is rarely a bad thing.  Good wishes!
