Oh, Jen, how many times I've pictured being in a situation similar to this! Wanting something within your grasp, yet fears trying to knock you down!
As everyone says, you know your limits with your anxiety and panic. BUT, if you can find any way to face your fears, I say, DO IT! I think it's something you won't regret.
I've never flown, either, and the thought of it terrifies me. But, if I were granted an opportunity at my life's dreams, I'm determined to find a way. I know--easier said than done. And this isn't something that I just "bucked up" and decided. I've had experiences that helped me prepare to be in a position to feel this determined. That doesn't mean that if it really happened, I'd really be able to do it. I just believe that I will.
I know it would be hard to be away from your loved ones all that time. I've never been separated like that, either. Well, my boyfriend goes away around Thanksgiving for about 10 days; I think that's the longest, but I'm home, rather than traveling. Is there someone who can make the trip with you, at least for a few days? If you can't, take some reading material, and have some people to phone or who will phone you.
How much time do you have to decide? How much time before you'd have to fly? There are several books and other things that might be helpful to you. Here are some:
Overcome the Fear of Flying (audio cd)
Flying Without Fear (paperback)
The Fearless Flyer's Handbook (paperback)
Fly Without Fear: Guided Meditations for a Relaxing Flight (audio cd)
Chicken Soup for the Soul Presents Fearless Flightkit (paperback)
