I would get the root canal; probably not feeding you a line; go to another dentist and get another opinion? A friend of mine just did that, he didn't believe he needed that either.

I go to the dentist for my checkup every 6 months and have a good rapport with him/them. I have had maybe 3-4 root canals (I don't get my teeth extracted as that just causes more problems further down the road).
