I can only speak from my own experience and maybe this might help you.
I was physically abused as a child. In the first aid course I just completed, we covered child abuse. I started to feel very sad (all the memories coming back) and then went straight to very upset!
I have learned through many professionals that I am not comfortable with feeling sad...so I switch to feeling angry/upset. I deal with it by allowing myself to feel sad or angry and not pressure myself. It takes time... .
