I don't know if this is a scientific advance, or an engineering one, but it is one I would like to see:

A successful new ion engine to drive spacecraft to much higher speeds (once into orbit) than are achieved with present-day chemical rockets. Might make travel to the planets possible in a few weeks. Of course, that has some disadvantages too -- we could do more damage to those places if we could get there more easily.
