That sounds like one heck of an outrageous thing to say to you, whatever their reasons for saying it.

My first guess is that they were talking to themselves -- even if they thought they were talking to you and managed to convince you they were. My next two guesses are the same as my first.

But... how on earth did you ever end up deciding to believe them?
