There is no time limit for depression and hypomania/mania. I have bipolar II and had a depression that lasted 2 years. Rapid cycling is defined as four or more episode in a year and yet some people cycle by the week or day. I tend to have hypomanic episodes that last just a few weeks while my depressions can last months before they are under control.
