It certainly sounds a horrible situation. I believe there is a facility to appeal when the child tax credit office have made a mistake which puts a family in impossible circumstances - is it worth looking into that? Free school meals may also be worth investigating - not much but it would help. I can imagine the difficulty of having to ask for a sub. Well done for doing it - it must have taken courage.
