Everyone has already stated, drinking alcohol can interact with medications negatively, causing reactions or interferring with the drugs ability to work properly.

My question is, if someone already has a mood disorder why would they compromise their stability by the addition of a non-prescribed mood altering substance, such as alcohol, which is a depressant?

Is this a sign medications have to be adjusted, because an individual is self medicating, or is this a co-occurring disorder needing treatment.? If this is only social drinking, one might still consider the effects alcohol can have on stability. Moderation is always best.
