I've always had this too. It's like a coping mechanism. I rarely have nightmares, because I can usually recognise that something's amiss and pull myself out before things get too scary! But then I can get confused, like complic8d. I also experience sleep paralysis, which is most likely as a result of whipping myself out of scary situations before my body can catch up!
