Hi,
I know it's different for everyone, but at least for me, sometimes I will be upset and want to hurt myself more at one time than another, and if I can get past the worst of it...if I can keep myself busy at that time, or visit with another person then, or do something productive....and just get through it....I can keep myself safe and get through it and it does pass. For me, it can help to keep my hands busy by playing solitaire with cards, or coloring in a coloring book, or doing crafts (knitting, crocheting). Going for a walk helps me too, because I can go outside, use up some energy, and sometimes work out some of my thoughts. Sometimes I call a friend, and I talk about the weather or ask them how they are doing, just to make some contact. I think what works for each person is different, but I know for me and for others I've talked to....if you can somehow get past the hardest parts and keep going, it can be worth it to keep trying, and the urges do improve with time as you learn different ways to handle things.
