No, you're misunderstanding the meaning of what "they" say (whoever they is, LOL). "Those who are close to you" doesn't mean "people who are around you or in your life" hurt you, but "people who mean something to you and who you care about" hurt you. Nevertheless, I'm not stating it as fact, but as something "they" say.

I can't say completely why we hurt the ones we love, but I can say that I hurt people sometimes because I stand up for my beliefs and believe in being true to myself. People who I love who disagree with me aren't always accepting of my beliefs, and don't understand my beliefs, and because of their beliefs, they hurt when I don't do what they think I should do.

I also hurt some people in trying to protect myself. I don't handle being "trapped" well at all, because of things that happened to me while I was young, and sometimes people think I'm being mean or cold when I'm just trying to breathe and stave off a panic attack.
