1. You have to casually ask people questions about their values and tell them your values for intimacy, monetary issues, life goals, etc., and
2. You then have to wait and see if what they have told you about themselves is consistently expressed in their actions.

My favorite line (actually, it's not a line, it's the truth) is telling a potential love interest that I am slow; that I need to know someone for a while before getting intimate. Basically, I tell them what I'm looking for. If that doesn't appeal to them then they are free to move on.
