No one can state with any certainty what the rental agreement says without reading it. While most rental agreement have fairly standard provisions, just because my contract says one thing does not mean another contract does too. Also, the landlord/tenant laws vary in each state.

lastyearisblank, read your agreement. If need be and you now reside in the U.S., call the state bar association and ask to be referred to a landlord/tenant attorney for a free consultation. Look in the yellow pages under attorneys to find the number.

Having practiced law for over twenty years, my gut tells me your landlord is trying to railroad you. What about a security deposit? If you made one, you should be getting the deposit back with some interest too.

Despite my misgivings, it is the contract that tells you what your rights are. An attorney might be helpful to give you a clearer understanding of what your rights are.
