I don't think that being shy is a bad quality! I know I can be quite shy at first, but then I do warm up to people quite well, and can sometimes be the center of attention. Meeting someone new is very hard, too. You have to think about what you will talk about, what you will do, on top of all the worries and insecurities that you have about the situation or yourself!
