Perna has great advice. You can always do more of what she says. And here's something ... find a place to volunteer every day that you're not at work or looking for a job. And remember, just because you put in an application or inquiry, you're not going to get the job unless you somehow differentiate yourself from all the others doing the same thing. Get on the phone and ask about the application status. Go visit the people and ask about the status. Keep putting in applications and keep walking in the door. Many times the job goes to the one who follows up or shows persistence, demonstrating that they really want the job and won't blow it off once they are on the payroll.
And that thing about no car ... phooey. (lol, is that a word anymore) ... there are plenty of places in this world where you can live, work, and enjoy life without a car. You don't have one at your university city, so keep on keeping on. Get a bike.
And it seems to me that someone looking for excuses why they're held back, seeing a psychiatrist would be right up there at the top. Please don't let that sequence of events stop your dream. You can get beyond all of these things with a persistent attitude of wanting to work around or over all obstacles. You have a lot to offer and it would be sad to see it lost because of external circumstances. GO GET 'EM!!!
