Websites that don't run daily virus/malware scans are vulnerable to attack.
A few weeks ago, I discovered one of the American Psychological Association's websites had been compromised to download a virus whenever you visited any of their pages. After 24 hours, the site was still online, giving viruses to the hundreds of people who had visited. Only after I complained the second time did they take it down to fix the problem.
The lesson? Without being on 24/7 alert and taking the necessary precautions, any website can be vulnerable to attack. We work hard to keep everything updated here so our users don't get exposed to that sort of thing, but it doesn't mean it can't happen.
